What is SECOR in Alberta?
The short version of SECOR certification Alberta: the same element standard as full COR, sized for a crew of ten or fewer.
SECOR — the Small Employer Certificate of Recognition — is Alberta’s safety certification for employers with 10 or fewer employees. It is built to the same element standard as full COR, and it also earns a WCB rebate — 10% in year one, 5% each maintenance year after. The difference is the route: you achieve it through a self-assessment your Certifying Partner reviews, rather than a full external audit. In short, it is what gets a small crew onto the prequalification lists that keep the good contracts out of reach.
Like full COR certification, SECOR is issued through Alberta’s Certifying Partners — ACSA, AASP, MHSA, AMTA, Energy Safety Canada and others. Not every partner issues SECOR, so we confirm the right one for your trade before you start. The difference is scope and effort: a small employer certifies on a reviewed self-assessment instead of a full third-party audit, which is why the manual, not the audit, is where the work lives. Because the manual is the whole job, getting it right makes you certification-ready and biddable far sooner.

What training does SECOR actually require?
There is no single provincial SECOR training requirement — every Certifying Partner sets its own. For example, ACSA asks for two courses, and AASP asks for one. Meanwhile, AMTA and AMHSA each want a two-day course plus a self-evaluator or refresher. MHSA wants three — while the Forest Products Association actually requires more training for SECOR than for COR. So if someone quotes you one universal course list, they’re reading off the COR page.
